Side trim molding for 123

Side trim molding for 123

One of my side molding pieces fell off of my door. I got new little red buttons for re-attaching it but can't seem to get the black clips on the molding to lock into the red buttons in the door. Is there a trick to this or is my molding piece tweaked so that it doesn't follow the contours of the door correctly.
