Unhappy 99 C280 Gas Gauge Problem

My fuel gage is acting up. Before dinner, it registered 1/3 of a tank. Filled it up and turned it on. It registered empty. Turned car off and turned it on but no luck. Proceeded to drive it home. About 30 seconds later, the orange warning light came on to indicate low fuel. I believe the delay was some sort of anti-slosh thing. Went home (2 miles away), slut down and turned it on and all is well again. My understanding is that there are 2 fuel sensors in the tank because it is a hump style. Does anyone have the test procedure to figure out which one is bad or how do I get it? I doubt it is the gauge but is there an confirm test procedure? TIA

Post Fuel Lever Sending Units

To test the Sending units You Will have to drain The Tank and Remove the Sending Units (Both Sides) Then test With a Ohm Meter..You can Test the Combi Gauge with the Star..Or HHT
Chances are the Sending Units are Defective...
I Have Replaced Several of them....
When I Worked For Mercedes
You Might Want to see if the Dealer will GOODWILL Them
as its a KNOWN Problem!

But if it is intermitten, is there a way to be sure which one it is?

yes, most certainly a known problem. Had the sending unit replaced on my wifes 00 C230 around 38k miles. I would hope the dealer will help you on this one if your out of warranty.

Intermittent Fuel Guage

Same thing happened to my wife's 1995 C280 several years ago. It usually happened when she fueled the car with BP gasoline. Not sure if it was something in the fuel or possibly the fueling process at the station. When she fueled up, the gas gauge would read zero and then after a period of time the low fuel indicator would light. Sometimes the gauge "drifted" a little up and down turning on and off the low fuel light. Sometimes when the gauge was reading zero you could turn the engine off and if you turned the key to the "on" position several times the fuel gauge would read accurately (full) again. This would seem to indicate some type of contamination on the fuel sending unit.

Bottom line is we stopped using BP fuel and this has not occurred again for the last three years. Try using a different fuel or gas station before you go to the expense of replacing the fuel sending unit. You may need to run several tanks of gas to clean things out.
