Steering Wheel Won't Recenter

I just had a new steering wheel (wood and leather) installed on my R129 ... looks great ... BUT turning it is very stiff and after making a turn, the steering wheel will not recenter itself - the car will continue in a turn untill you forcibly turn the wheel back to center.

Also, I hear a "sliding" sound when the wheel is turned than I never noticed with the original wheel.

BTW, the new steering wheel was made from an OEM wheel.

Anyone ever heard of this before?? I'm hoping the problem is with the installation and can be easily corrected. Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
-Aaron

If you're lucky, the new wheel was improperly installed. Still could have damaged enough stuff that you should have the shop doing the installation redo it - and replace anything comp. If you are UNlucky, someone at the shop decided to adjust your loose steering box at the same time, and the damage to that may be permanent. They will also likely deny it unless you approach the matter carefully. E.g:

'I noticed my steering seems more precise now, did you do anything to affect that?'

If they mention adjusting the box, then nail 'em!

Thanks!

Thanks for the insight. I have an appt. with the shop tomorrow morning. Hope there's no damage and only a bad installation but I'll take your advice on handling it. Thanks again!
