Maybe it isn't there. MBUSA seems to have taken a "not recommended for towing" attitude over the years, and not sold hitches that were available in Europe. I know you can get a 2,500 lb hitch for the 124.

Those 300E/sedan hitches don't align with the wagon's chassis.

I have one on my 1988 W124 wagon, but I can't remember who made it, but I did order through Pep Boys 10-years ago.

Da'Lan makes a 2,500 lb. hitch for both sedan and wagon. Everyone else is 2,000 lbs.

PS: the name confuses me because I think of Deland, Florida. . .

They typically wouldn't put a tow rating on an engine, but rather on a car, and that number should be in your Owner's Manual.

But it's not because Mercedes does not approve towing for USA cars.

I tow a 5 X 8 enclosed trailer with my TE with a quad inside. In the hills of Western Pa. it has never given me a problem,,, going up or down the hills.
