1991 E300 Rpm too high!
Hello
On my wifes 1991 E300 i have recently noticed that the RPM on idle is too high and would appreciate some insight on the fix please! Secondly i had it detaild professionally and since the right turn signals are staying on when the headlights are on but is normal at other times as long as the head lights are not on. I will appreciate all comments and help. Thank you Av

Av,
Help us help you: what is the idle? At warm and cold engine temps? Could be a vacuum leak. Regarding the turn-signal probem, check to make sure your emergency lights switch isn't in mid position. If not, try using it and rocking it on and off several times. Thought here is that the detailer might have allowed "cleaning juices" to fall down into the switch and its contacts. Keep us posted, Haasman

Haasman thanks for your reply.
The RPM at start cold is around 2000 and once the cold start idle kicks out it goes to around 1600 and thats where it stays. The car has 128,000 miles on it. Solved the light problem, turned out to be a bad signal light bulb. Thanks again Your thoughts will be appreciated. AV

I am curious, did this fast idle just start one day or did it slowly increase over a period of time.
There are multiple reasons why this might occur, air leaks, vacuum leaks, bad idle control valve connection under your air cleaner (this is what I am guessing). Remove your air cleaner, taking careful note of all the connections to it. Underneath you will see a round cylinder looking object with an electrical connector and a 1" tube connecting to it. Are the tubes hard and brittle? Have they slipped off? Additionally you may want to check this thread: Fast Idle Keep us posted, Haasman

As a simple starting point, make sure the throttle linkage is not stuck, and is returning to full idle state.
