74 450SLC rough idle solved!
Yet another "rough idle" post. Maybe this will be helpful to someone.
Been living with "lumpy" idle for the last few months. Not horribly bad, but definately annoying. At various stages have replaced/checked, points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing, EFI sensors/mixture adjustments. While improving other aspects of the car's behavior, mediocre idle has remained. Decided to check valve lash this weekend. Found all exhaust valves somewhat tight, a couple perhaps more than 0.001" off. After setting them all at cold spec (0.008" ex, 0.003" in), I find the engine now idles like glass. Idle speed also increased, had to dial it back down using the idle air screw. what a difference! |

Valve adjust is in the works for the 280 soon, gotta tear the Volvo apart first -- cheaper to fix it and drive it at 30 mpg than the 280 at 15....

psfred; What would you consider to be your best car? Would it be the 280? I mean to drive of course and considering other aspects. You always talk about your 280, could you post a pic of it sometime so I could see waht you are talking about? I see it in my mind with the yellow hood and blue body is it? Can't remember your combo.
Thanks David

Dave:
Pics were posted last year when I got it. Hood has been painted blue (I got close enough you have to look to see it's the wrong color) -- I got tired of the yellow and getting teased. I'd have to say I cannot decide. I really like the 280, espcially since I got the trigger points clean and the mechanical advance working -- it just flies now. However, I'm also rather parsimonious, and the cost of the fuel is killing me. It is fun outrunning the ricer cars! Everyone pulls out to pass me on back roads, I guess I don't drive fast enough for them. I go lightly on the throttle, it REALLY burns fuel if you stick you foot in it a lot. My 300D is a dream on the highway -- flies along at 80 very nicely, and it goes forever on a tank of fuel (450 miles so far on the last tank, sitting on 3/4 empty, and that includes a trip with several return lines dripping). Similar performance to the 280, but very little of the head-turning power. Believe me, the 280 gets noticed. Less now that the exhaust is quiet, though.... The 300D is a little sluggish in town. And for really long highway trips, I still like the Volvo the best. The seats allow you to move around more, so I don't get so stiff, and it gets about the same milage (or did, its in the garage for surgery at the moment) as the 300D with somewhat less power. Better back seat room for passengers, too. Four country road driving, the 220D is the best -- better handling than the 280. The swing axle design gets obvious at high speed on a twisty road. Peter
