I have noticed a low speed grinding type noise through the steering column of my '92 500E, 61k miles. Noise only occurs below 40 mph and goes away when I apply the brakes.

If I gently ride the brakes the noise goes away as well. I know that these cars have a reputation for dodgy brakes and my early production (late '91) car has the original brakes. The pads are fine, I know, because the car just went through its major 60k mile service.

Any similar experiences?

You should have the wheel bearings checked. Also, have the torque of the wheels checked. (lug bolts)

Lastly have the shields checked for a rock that could be stuck in there.
