Question 1987 420 Sel

Hey all, well I have been steadily working on My '87 420 (getting ready to replace my '00 S4 :-( I'm going to miss turbos, but grad school and houses eat up money), detailing it and such, the only thing about the car, the steering. It feels like I am driving a Grand Cherokee! I think the shocks are done for, unfortunately I have only been able to find Bilsteins at $165 a piece, which isn't unheard of. Are there any other shocks out there that you have put on your W126s? Also would just tightening up the rack take care of some of the "dead spot?"

If the front end feels "floaty" over bumps, then think about new shocks, they're all pretty easy to replace, especially the front.
Before thinking about adjusting the steering gear box, I'd check out the linkage first; the tie rods, the drag link, and especially the idler arm bushings.
