The dash light for the SRS does not come on with the other indicator lights when the car is started. Could the bulb be out? How do I check the indicator light? New MBZ owner of 88' 300E.

The bulb almost has to be out. The default is on. To check, you will have to pull the cluster out.
(If you need the special tools or the bulbs, we have them in the partsshop. ------------------ Benzmac: Donnie Drummonds 1992 500E (very soon I hope 1981 280GE SWB ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN SERVICE MANAGER FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |

To get at that bulb, you will have to pull the cluster. Not difficult, but requires a gentle touch. The cluster comes out of the dash via hooks placed at the 3:00 and 9:00 O'clock positions. Get under the car and disconnect speedo cable at tranny (needed for slack to remove cluster). The SRS test lamp is the second lamp form the right edge of the cluster. Unsnap the socket and replace the bulb. Have fun..

Thanks for the prompt reply. Is is possible to pull out the instrument cluster enough to replace the bulb without disconnecting the speedometer cable?

Tony, it's possible to pull the cluster out and totally bend the speedo cable housing. The cluster is about 8 to 10 inches deep. Just look at it this way. Time is cheap meaning doing it the right way takes longer. Haste makes waste meaning trying to pull the cluster w/o releasing the speedo cable first may set you for a unnecessary and not inexpensive speedo housing replacement. It's only a little bulb, take the time and do it once only. Good Luck..

SRS light bulb missing!
Well today I removed the cluster to check out the SRS light blub and found the bulb missing. Apparently the prior owner must have removed the bulb. When I replaced it the light stays on, so there must be a problem with the SRS system. I hope that the bulb being removed was not a sign that the fix for the problem is very expensive. I pulled the cluster to check on the SRS light bulb and also to see if I could determine why the odometer stopped working. After finding the SRS bulb missing and then attempting to fix the odometer without success, my repair attempt today was a real bust. The car is going into the shop soon to fix the AC system, I will add the SRS to the list.
