'86 W124 retrofitted with '94-up front clip

headlights, grill, and hood, is ita direct bolt on or needs a few mods to sit nice and flush

I've got both, don't see any other differences. If you've got headlamp wipers you'll need those and the wiper panels also.

How about sidepanels? Can they also be swiped

All of the people that I have talked to that have done this mod tell me it is a direct swap.

The side panels IIRC will fit in the existing door molding slots/holes (upper & lower), the rocker panel moldings are necessary to complete the look, a little more work, and you will want to get the larger jack-pads from the later car. Leave your jack-hole plugs out, they are covered.

The chrome strips from the bumpers can also be grafted (just drill holes) or you can use the entire bumper assembly. IIRC sedan and wagon side panels are the same.
