Weird noise when my car is cold. 91300SL

I have a 91 300SL. when I get in the car in the morning the engine wines especially when I take off, It takes forever to shift but I know thats normal but it wines very loud, Almost sounds like there is no steering fluid, (but there is). ANd then It just stops. As if it was working on a switch. Does anyone have a clue????
And 1 more thing how do I adjust the Idle?? Thanks Guys.

Not sure of the AIR pump is repairable or not, but they are a tad pricey as a unit.

Ignore it untill it fails. (the old 92 wagons has made odd noises for 80K) The 104 engines also have a pretty strong oil pump whine cold as well. Either way, untill it quits I'd leave well enough alone. The only serviceable part on the air pump is the clutch and the idler bearing will fail, however, thats a hot noise, not a cold noise.

Just for fun, why not take the AP apart and lube the bearings? Might get another 100K out of it.

So what can I do if its too low? Every time I come to a stop, it drops near 5K and vibrates. Thanks Gill.

5K=5000, I hope it idles lower than that .

You need to get the engine checked out and see why it's idling so low. There's a problem somewhere, although you can check the data sticker under the hood and it'll tell you what it's supposed to idle at, maybe the problem is just the shaking, which may just be that it needs plugs or something. There's no screw you just dial up to increase the idle, I'll tell you that right now.

Early HFM M104, clean the EA and make sure the return spring is still on the side of it, lube up the linkage a bit too while your there. (I've seen missing return springs cause the earlier EAs to become a bit twitchy about idle)

EA=Electonic Accelerator. That's right, all these manufacturers think they're Soooooo advanced with their throttle-by-wire systems? MB had it 10+ years ago!!

Talking engine whines

I always thought the early morning start up whines were caused by the drive belt being too loose and slipping. This is what used to happen to many of my neighbour's cars. Yes, there were a few MBs around the block. Very popular car there. Having gone a few miles, the noise goes away.
