What would cause the AC compressor to suddenly stop working?
One day the AC was working just fine, and today the compressor won't kick on. What gives? The car is a 87 300D which *unfortunately* was converted to R134A. I'd love to covert it back to R12 some day...

the compressor has a low pressure switch chances are that kicked in and disconnected the clutch on the compressor.

Do a search on Klima relay and then on ice cube relay.

I jumped the two wires at the pressure switch, and the clutch "clicked". So I guess that the switch is bad. Funny how the AC was working perfectly just two days ago.

I doubt the switch is bad, rather you are low on freon. check for bubbles in the receiver/dryer glass. If you have them you need freon.

OK. Now I'm a bit worried. I connected the can to the low side... switched the AC on, and proceeded to charge the system. The needle on the gauge read into the OK area as I was charging the system but when I let off the button on the can, it read the same as it was BEFORE I charged the system - which is ZERO on the gauge.
I really don't know how accurate the thing is. Should I spring for another can or look deeper into the system? This leads me to think that either 1.) I did something really really wrong or 2.) There is a BIG ugly leak that suddenly sprang up overnight. I should add that when I jumpered the wires at the pressure switch, the clutch "clicked" but the compressor did not switch on. |

when you say the compressor did not turn on do you mean it was not spinning, cause if the clutch engaged then the compressor is turning. If it does not turn the compressor is siezed however, the belt would then break or squeal until it did. I would recommend you have it looked at cause the AC is very expensive to fix if you screw it up.
