CD changer Install Problem
I have a 99 SlK 230. I purchased a CD player from EBAy. I made sure its the correct model number. I have it hooked up properly I beleive- Powere cabel (I know I have power from the little green light on th unit) and fiber optic cables- bot changer and head unit using the correct cables (not hte ones for the phone). When I hit the button on the head unit for CD, it displays"NO CD CHANGER" is there a computer code to set or something?? hELP!!

These SLK's are really complex on the fiber optics. There are 2 sets of fiber optics, plus another jumper fiber optics from side to side in the trunk. The original configuration is basically a non-useable configuration. You need to reconfigure not only the 2 that you need to use in the trunk, but also there are extras behind the radio that have to be reconfigured. The reason for all this is that the fiber optics have to be able to be set up for either the CD changer only, the phone only, or both the CD and phone. The phone components would mount in the left side of the trunk if you had it, so things get a little confusing. If you had just the phone, you'd need the pair going from the radio to the left side of the trunk. To have just the CD like you want, you need a pair from the radio to the right side of the trunk. To have both, one fiber optics line goes to the right side, then uses this "jumper" line to go from the right side of the trun to the left side, then one from the left side back to the radio. Easy, huh? In addition to that, yes there is a programming change required so that the radio will "know" that there is a cd changer present. If you can get the radio removed (required a cheap pair of special tool "keys" to remove the radio) then maybe I can help you get the fiber optics straightened out, but you should get this programming changed in the radio too. Without it, it may work OK for awhile, but ultimately it's going to need it changed or the whole thing can quit on you (the sound system anyways) Gilly |

Gilly, could the programming change you speak of apply to a 1999 E430? I have an intermittent problem where the radio will show "NO MAGAZINE" when I try to select the CD, or when the CD Player tries to move from one CD to another while playing.

Yes, any of the models using the fiber optics style of stereo, I believe the change to fiber optics occured around October or so of 1997, for most models anyways.
The message you are getting doesn't really strike me as the type you would get from this. I could see a message "No CD" or "NO CD Changer", but "No Magazine" is kind of weird. I mean, I've SEEN this message alot, but sounds weird that a misconfigured radio would cause it. I would more suspect there is a problem with the changer itself, but if you know the internal configuration of the radio isn't current, it would be worth a try. Gilly (editted post. the fiber optics changeover appeared during the 1998 model run, sometime in the fall of 97 i believe. I was messed up on years as you see later in this thread) Last edited by Gilly; 11-06-2003 at 09:57 PM. |

I don't think the programming was upgraded since I took delivery of the car in November 1998 - I didn't have a problem that would cause the dealer to look into the issue. This issue started in June of this year. I guess I'll ask my dealer. Thanks for the response!

If you got it Nov 98, I'm not 100% sure if the actual build date would put yours in the "fiber optics" system. Easy way to tell is that the radios with the Fiber Optics system have the telephone key pad built into the right side of the radio faceplate, and use the phone keypad numbers for the radio presets. The older radio has the 1 through 6 numbers under the radio display panel that are the preset keys., and have the "tune" and "seek" bars on the lower right corner with the "SC" (scan) button in the middle of the bars. Thanks Gilly. The car is an early '99 with the fiber optic radio.

OH right, I'm off by a year, a year earlier is when it would have been "iffy"
