ML 430 Which model year to avoid??
Hi Everyone
I am in the process of buying a used ML SUV and will appreciate input as to which years and models are to be avoided or any tips on what to look for. Any or all advice is appreciated. Thanks AV

Hardly anything about the ML "can't" be fixed, MB at least did come up with cures for most everything I can think of, except refusing to update the 50:50 transfer case on the first 500 or so (?) production models, but this was on the ML320 anyways, not the 430. The 430 I think were all pretty good, you don't even hear much about the oil consumption problem on the V8's like you do the V6, of course there are a lot more V6's out there.
If you want to avoid potential "quirks" in need of updating, buy the newest one you can afford....... Gilly PS Personally I would NOT buy one with the Skyview Roof....rattles, leaks, motor problems, etc etc, NOT worth it unless you really really love it and won't mind the additional repair and upkeep. |

I would avoid the 1999 model. The front brakes were improved in 2000 to equal the ML55. Also make sure if you get an early 2000 model the Harmonic Balancer is not part #112 035 00 00. If it is and you buy it, have it replaced before it fails and costs big $$$$. Also make sure the aux fans in front of radiator have the new wiring harness and fuse #44 upgrade.

Gilly,
Are oil consumption problems you speak of on all MB V6's or only on on ML320's. I assumed that the M-Class had the same engine as the E320. |

All of the M112 V6's, afaik.
I don't recall hearing alot of griping from the M113 V8 owners. Gilly |

I interened at MBUSA HQ in Montvale NJ in the Warranty department. The 112 and 113 all have problems with oil consumption but that what you get when you use low tension rings and that silcone coating on the sleeves. There not bad engines if you change your oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles DO NOT go by the FSS system. IMO I would rather get any other Benz than the ML that thing is just made with less quality than other MB's. Have fun with your new vehicle though what ever it is.
