A.B.S. lite on ......check your grounds/connections.

ABS light came on a few weeks back (1987 190e). I know it was related to the ABS, as it would only illuminate after the car was moving. Trying the simple things first, both front wheeel sensors are relatively new, I removed the battery and unplugged the ABS computer. I also cleaned the battery terminals which had a tiny bit of corrosion. No more ABS light.

For some reason, the older this car gets, the more attention it needs to grounds and connectors. Not the first problem that has been this simple to fix.........and definitely not the last.

Hope this helps someone.

Check the 10amp fuse in the silver box near the fuse box. (I'm not sure if the 190E).

Tinker,

On my '98 260e, I'm experiencing my ABS light on after moving. Also, the ABS activates frequently at low speed during slow stops on dry pavement. I've also noticed that my cigarette lighter no longer works and that when the ABS activates on a stop, the radio will shut off.

Any thoughts on the electrical issue. I've replaced the OVP relay and cleaned all of the ABS sensors.

Even with my 560SEC 1989 the ABS activates frequently at low speed during slow stops on dry pavement.

Is it because there is air & oil in the break pipelines? If so, what is the best way to remove the air from the pipelines?

Steven,

Once the ABS light is lit, usaually the system should not be providing any assistance. It sounds as if your is intermittent? I would focus on the front wheel sensors, as I have been told the rears rarely go bad. You can jack up the car and check the wheel sensors with a volt meter and see if you can find a interruption in the signal to the ABS computer. With the other symptoms, I think there is a related electrical problem in there some where.

Check / clean all your grounds and connectors.

Check the OVP first. This is a normal sign of a failing OVP or a Blown OVP fuse. I would start there as it is simple. The OVP in the W201 is located behind the plastic cover behind the battery. Red Top Silver Cased Relay with a Plastic fuse cover on the top.

Jamie, I replaced the OVP a while ago, but haven't gone back to look at it since. I recall the part number on the new one being different than the old one, and I wondered if I actually installed the wrong one.
