Car won't start

Here is what is happening. Usually every morning(and sometimes after setting for a while), when you go to start the car, the starter motor fires up the engine, and the engine run's for a second or two then dies. It's as though the engine isn't getting any gas. Wait a couple of seconds, try it again and the car usually starts and keeps running. Every now and again, it takes three tries. A side bar to this is that after you start the first time and the car dies, you have to arm and unarm the theft control system or you can't engage the engine at all.

Any ideas of where to start would be much appreciated.
