Did search, still have CEL question

As the title states, I did a search in both the tech help and hot rod forums and still have some questions.

The car is a 1993 500E with a build date of 5/93. Yesterday, on the coldest day of the year so far, my check engine light came on. Besides the obvious question of what could it be?, I'd also like to know if my car is OBD I or OBD II, and if it is OBD I if there is a way to read the stored codes. On my old Chrysler minivan, you can watch the speedometer needle swing and tap out the stored codes. Anything similiar for this car?

Also, did MB tie any other diagnostic systems into the CEL, or is it strictly emissions related.

BTW, car has 62K miles, no stumbling or hesitation. Temp and oil pressure is normal for the car. Acceleration and cruising is normal.

Thanks in advance.
