What's involved in replacing lower balljoint on W126 ?

Hello all,

Mine is an '86 560SEL. As the subject already stated, I'd like to tackle the job myself with a local shop help removing and pressing in the new joint (US-DS).

Do I need to remove front wheel hub/bearings on the process ?
If the answer is yes, then I'll wait till new rotors are required.

Please advise!
TIA,
Frank.

Make sure you have a shop lined up ahead of time. Alot of them don't have the appropriate press. Others won't do it unless they also get to sell you the parts.

Thanks for the quick replies...

Jim,
Just got off the phone with an MB tech at an independent shop, he quoted $170 including alignment with self-supplied part. He indicates that the front hub/bearings, even though closed, would be untouched. What's your opinion ?

Thanks again,
Frank.

If you take the whole car in, and they have the right press, yes thay can do it with the hub still on. That sounds like a good price if that's for both sides. I was quoted at my indie shop at something like $185 per side. That's why I decided to tackle it myself.
Oops. Sorry Jim

Doesn't sound like a bad deal. I imagine you could do this job by pulling the spindle and leaving the hub/brgs intact but who would want to?
