what's torque for bolts when replacing valve cover gasket on 87 300e
Just decided I'm going to replace my valve cover gasket tomorrow b/c the snow around here has given me the day off. Anybody know the exact recommended torqueing for the bolts when putting cover back on? From a search I determined that it's not that tight and 15 nm is too much, so I guess 10nm? can I just wing it?
Thanks a bunch everyone!

Whoops!
Just decided to do one more search and found a thread saying the "manual" says 17 lbs. I goes I'll rely on that and my judgement.
One other post also said it was 9nm for a 190e 2.3, is this engine that much different?

The Germans taught me that tight is tight. Go with your feelings on everything except critical torques like brakes, cyl heads, bearings, and valve bodies.

maybe I am being too neurotic. I'll go by what I think is right.
Thanks a lot autozen. Your response is "enlightening".

Those are 6mm bolts which are about the same as 1/4-inch SAE.
I wouldn't go more than 8 lb-ft; 9 NM is only 6.5 lb-ft. Most of the specs I have for various 1/4-inch SAE or 6mm Metric bolts into aluminum threads are in the range of 40-100 lb-in. Duke |

My manual for a 103 engine says 8.5 NM
