87 vs 88 starter questions

hello

i have a ? regarding the starters in my 2 420's.

the 87 shows 2 starters a sr59x and the one for an eng# 12-082267. no other prt number

the 88 shows engine # 12-082267 and nothing about the sr59x but it states

there is a screen cover when Required when used with smaller vesion SR 459 X in place of SR 59 X.

the problem is the 88 doesn't say a thing about the sr59 or the 459

what gives??

i wanted to get a new starter & put it in the 88 and move the 88 to the 87.

how come the differences or is there a difference at all?
thanks for input
craig

i may have one

Craig,
i have a Bosch rebuilt in the garage, available if you want it. I can't recall the specifics, but i think the update was (the 459?) is a smaller diameter motor that requires an adapter (screen) plate.
Will try to run it over to You today so you can at least see. In the middle of heads gaskets on the 560, son wrenching while i blindly lead!! Hope to see you later this morning.

From the info I have it looks like the staters are the same part number. On cars up to eng.# 116 965 12 054964 you will also need a different centering plate part# 116 151 03 45 to go with the new starter. If I remember correctly the later starters are smaller and use an aluminum centering plate. The early starters were much larger and used steel shims but no centering plate. The part number I came up with on the starter is 004 151 78 01.
It's possible that this number has changed again,My parts info is several years old.
I hope this helps, Robert.
