260E starter motor
1987 260E. E Mitchell online says that to remove the starter motor I need to disconnect the steering linkage. Has anyone managed to remove the starter without disturbing the steering?
Also, where does the speedo cable enter the gearbox? As always thanks for the help guys Michael |

I did my wife's 89 260E a few years ago. Don't remember disconnecting linkages but I believe I had to turn the wheels slightly to get the starter to clear the steering when removing it.
Speedo cable goes into the drivers side of the transmission near the rear. Should be obvious once you're under there. |

Thanks Rick,
I just changed the front drive shaft rag joint, I think I saw the speedo cable entering a box close to the output shaft. The starter looks like a real bear to get out. Mine starter is failing to engage on the first 2 or 3 tries then it engages and all's well. Michael |

Hmm. A bit tight, but should come out with some wrestling around, I think. I got one out of a 190E once from underneath with everything attached, but I didn't get it back in! finally jacked it up and pulled the left engine mount.
Watch carefully as it comes down, there may be a particular position and rotation necessary to get it back in. Peter
