Question w140 5-Speed Transmission

Back in December of 2002, the Reverse gear crapped out in my 1992 300SE. I brought the car to AAMCO, because its local, and had the whole thing rebuilt for a cost of $3500 bucks. Since i have had the car back, i notice, when it is cold, and even when it is warm, there is a 6 second hesitation when i put the car into drive. When the car is engaged in revers, it engages instantly. I brought the car back to AAMCO, and they said that there was nothing they could do but perhaps flush the fluid and put synthetic fluid instead. I have a feeling they don't know what is going on. Could anyone help me on this? I have heard that there is some hydraulic valve on the outside of the transmission that regulates pressure on the transmission, could this have something to do with it? Any suggestions would help.

Mike
