replacing shock struts for tailgate on 300TE wagon

I need some help in accessing the shock struts that support the rear tailgate on our '93 300TE wagon. The original struts have lasted 250,000 miles but will not hold the gate up in cold weather. I would like to replace them but can not get the access panel loose in the rear of the wagon. Any help would be appreciated. srharvey
