Ok, I'm beat into submission. I give up! I quit! I still can't figure out how to shift my car below the "D" on the automatic transmission. It goes into R or N or D properly-shifts smoothly and drives really fast but it's like there's a 'stopt' to prevent in from being shifted into 4-3-2 or 1. There is no slop in the shifter and everything is tight. Someone please help before I say the heck with it and trade it for a 1991 500SL i just saw!

Oh yeah, trade it for an early R129. Go from a sticking shifter to leaking evaporator ($3K bill), top mechanism problems, etc. Out of the frying pan into the fire.
Have you checked the bushings? If the tranny is working fine is sounds like a linkage problem.
