the front disks on my 560sel are getting close to the min thinkness (i think). What is the absolute minimum thickness for the brake rotors that would require replacement?

thx

Depends on the deductible of your auto insurance.

Earl:
I can ride along with your humor, but anyone with a rather useful response would be appreciated.

There are some threads here with specific measurements, and i was reading one fairly recently. One of the easy checks is the lip that is formed on the outer edge--shouldn't be much of one. If i get a chance at work today, i'll do a search and help point You to it. Glad You saw that as humor, only meant to offer a chuckle.

Da data....

Emmy,
I took the following from my alldata subscription for my 560:

Nominal Thickness
Front 1.102 in
Rear 394 in

Minimum Refinish Thickness
Front 1.024 in
Rear 0.339 in

Lateral Run-Out
Front 0.0047 in Note: Maximum
Rear 0.0047 in Note: Maximum

The above is a copy-paste from the specifications table. I also found 2 threads here with posts by RKreutzer who refers to a beginning thickness of 28 mm (1.1 inches) with a service life to 25.4 mm. Equates to 1.3 mm of wear per side, or not a whole lot. Not accurate, but i think that is about the thickness of a penny for a lip. Kreutzer was referring to a 420 sel. Do a search for "brake rotor thickness" and only 5 or 6 threads will come up, he does some good posting on 2 of them.

Hope this helps

P.S.

That rear nominal thickness from alldata has to be a typo--should be 0.394 inches, not 394 inches. All i did was copy and paste.

Earl:
thx for the effort. this helps a lot. by the way, is your subscription to alldata useful? what information do you get and how much does it cost?

Just looking at the data, it looks like it is time for me to replace my front disk rotors. I would be looking for proceddures and recommended sites to buy the parts.

thx,
Emmy

No problem

I have the shop cd's, alldata, and this forum. Alldata is 24.95/year for the first car and 14.95/yr (i think) for each additional car. i hardly use the cd's any more, alldata is similar info and much easier fo ME to navigate. Searching this forum usually points me in the right direction for a problem, then study the alldata stuff on R & R, then come back to the forum to search on experience of those who have done the same job. May sell the cd's, may keep them to use with my laptop for road trips.

As for parts, hard to beat the service and pricing of FastLane. On top of that, Phil knows his MB's pretty well, and still is way patient with people like me who are neophytes. They also use Airborne as a shipping option which gives me next day delivery in the midwest for about the same money as ups ground. On the rare occaision i pay a dollar or two more, i take a minute to remember that if not for the forum they sponsor, i'd never be able to do any of this myself. (not that i always get it right the first time!!)
