Hi,
I would like some information on adjusting the HLC units in my 1983 380 116.963 V-8. I am rebuilding the motor and will install 16 new HLC units, thrust shims and rockers. (I bought the tool for measuring the thickness of the thrust washers) My question is: Do the new HLC units need to be pumped up with oil from the engine rotating or are they pumped up at the factory when assembled? I have the engine out of the car on a stand so I can't spin it fast enough for the oil pump to pump oil through the engine. I read several posts on this subject but didn't find anything about my question. The manual states to rotate the engine for 30 seconds before measuring. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob |

As long as the rocker arms are snug against the camshaft you will get a correct reading. MANY times the lifters will pump-up too much & you won't make correct shim changes.

Thanks for the info MB DOC.
One more question. Is it necessary to remeasure after I run the engine in the car (plan to reinstall spring 04) if the lifters are quiet, or assume with no noise the correct thrust washers were used? Thanks, Bob |

No noise & good compression means they are correctly adjusted!
