I have heard of reports of the plastic rail guides breaking and being a costly repair to replace. I have not heard any reports related to the '92 500E but I'm wondering if this is only due to the limited number of them and the relatively low miles that they as a group have logged.

Are there any chain/guide differences in the 119 used in the '92 500E vs '92 500SEL, for example?

As of yesterday, I have 100K on my '92 and am asking the perinnial question of is it time to change the chain and guides. ALSO, is changing the rail guides ADDITIONAL work or corresponding to a chain replacement.

thanks in advance! I appreciate this great site!

I have done this on a 500E...If the oil changes are neglected EVER, or if the chain tensioner rattles even the slightest on start up, I'd have this done.

You will need the rails, tensioner, and a new chain. ( This is how we do it and we have had no problems)

Specail tools are required, be sure the shop has done this before.
