W124 Blower Motor install problem

Hello, everyone!
I recently had a blower motor installed(94 e320) by a MB "specialist" (I didnt do it myself because its soo cold here now, and I regret that!) When I picked it up I noticed that on the auto setting, when its about medium speed it vibrates somewhat and and on hi speed it vibrates terribly, in fact you can feel it though the steering wheel and pedals and its awfully loud. I brought it back and they replaced it with another one(these are Behr units, with squirrel cages) and it does the same thing. Now I noticed that Im not getting the air flow that I should and wondered if a flap isnt opening , would this cause the vibration. Also while changing the motor is there somehting he could have screwed up? Reason I ask is that the specialist didnt replace it but one of his mechanics. Also at the time they replaced the filters. I spoke to the owner and he says he doesnt know whats wrong, I suggested to him that I take to someone who knows and Ill send him the bill. He says he will take a look at it, but I dont want to get dupped thats why Im asking. Thanks!
Chris

Easy for me to say..............I would have them take it out, put it on a testbench, spin it up & see where the vibration is.
May have to send it to Larry Bible for balancing.

BadBenz94,
I have seen two blowers on 124s flipped backwards in the housing. Quick test, turn on defrost and place a heavy piece of paper on the dash(we use the keytag) the blower should pin the paper to the windshield.

Just did this last weekend

I put in a blower motor (ACM) last weekend and if one does not check before sewing it back together it is easy enough to put the motor in backward. The vibration could also be due to the top cover of the blower motor not being placed snugly with ALL clips re-attached....Trust me...I spent a 2.5 hours last weekend (in my garage thermometer read 22F to boot!)getting that right...Finally after two weeks I got to drive it for the past couple of days with heat!

I just put a new blower motor (behr with cage) in my 92 400E. The problem I had is that I put it in, and then tested it, and well, on high it would only spin up to about medium speed. I contacted a few sources and they said my blower control unit was bad (the heatsink and connectors under the hood, not the push button unit).

It may make sense because one night it was -8 here ( i live in NY) and I went to turn the heat on, and nothing happened. I pushed the high fan button and still nothing happened. Perhaps since the motor was "frozen", I wore out the fan resister. So I am now waiting on a used control unit (100 bucks used, potomac german) so I can throw this thing back together and I dont freeze my butt off.

In the meantime, I totally lubricated and cleaned my mono wiper assembly in my basement. I split the case and lubricated all the internal workings of this eccentric mechanism. I cant wait to see how fast and smoothly is glides when I get it back on. I used synthetic grease.

One question, isnt it somewhat impossible to install it backwards?? I mean, the wire connectors go on the drivers side? correct? When you snap the metal retaining strap in place, it has a cutout for those wires. Just a though, I could be wrong.

-Andy

p.s. I will let you know about the final install. Hopefully tomorrow. And yes I will freeze my a$$ off putting it back together. I wish I had a heated garage.

Yeah, im not sure about the installing of it backwards either, my car still vibrates but they say the bellows are bad and since they are not opening, its causing the vibration, they gave me my old motor back and this spring Im pulling it all apart myself, if anyone elese has any ideas they would be appreciated, also is it possible for the bellows to be bad already for a '94

Chris,

What exactly do they mean by the "bellows"? If your motor is vibrating, I would think it would be an imbalanced shaft (cage). The cage does have little weights on it for balance. I just installed mine (Behr with cage) and it operates smoothly as ever. The only flap in that area is the recirculation flap. If the bellows (or air flaps) are not opening, It wont cause a vibration.

Question?!

How do I get at all of the ducts and flaps and doors, etc, that control where the air goes, and how do these operate? By vacuum? I can press every button (except for 0) on the dash, and airflow does not change--temp wheel seems ok as does fan speed--but cannot get the airflow direction to change. Also, don't believe recirc is actuating anymore, although it lights up. I just don't hear it "come on" like it used to. No A/C out of center vents--but it will come out defrost vents and side vents where it is currently stuck. You guys seem knowledgable here...

Thanks

Badbenz,
that's monkey poo that they are feeding you. There's no way in haites that busted bellows are gonna make a fan vibrate. Sounds like after all THAT, you're still gonna have to do the job yourself

Ok, well thank you for all of your help. AMG280 the bellows or vacuuum switch or whatever are the items that open the flaps....
A good friend of mine which I failed to contact referred me to someone else who stated he woudl be glad to look at it even though someone else did the repair...so Im going there next Wednesday. Its really pissing me off(excuse my language) but as soon I find out the real truth, I will let you know plus the original people who worked on it and chalk it up as a learning experience. It seems as though if you want it done right you have to do it yourself which is a shame....
