Hello,

I have a 1993 190E 2.3 with a harsh cold shift, but a wonderfully smooth warm and hot shift (Thanks to other posts in this forum which suggested to adjust the modulator.) The situation is relieved (but clearly not corrected) by disconnecting the upshift delay relay on the driver's side close to the firewall. The owner's manual does say that the upshift delay is normal, but it never used to be this harsh, even after the modulator adjustment. Do you think that replacing this relay will correct my harsh cold shift, or is there another adjustment to correct cold shifting? Also, is there any harm in running the car without this upshift delay until I get the situation corrected? I know that the upshift delay is to warm up the cat quickly, but will it really warm up that much quicker without this upshift delay? Thanks in advance for any relpies.

This is normal to us. Our government mandates such things. I can't advise against it.

Most of these cars have California emission controls & the delayed shift is checked for correct operation every day. Changing this will make the "RED" check engine appear!
