190E No Start

I have a problem with my '88 190E. I tried to start it and it blew a 16 amp fuse -- number 8 I think (second fuse row from bottom, second from left).

I replaced the fuse but I can't get it to start. (I can't determine what part or module runs thru this fuse.) I have discovered that if I put a little gas in the carb that it will start, but will not keep running unless I pump the gas peddle and keep the RPM to about 4000. I've unplugged the cold start switch -- same thing; jumped the switch cable, and still the same thing. I can hear the fuel pump humming when I turn on the ignition (replaced the pump & filter about a year ago). A local tech said that it sounded like a vacuum problem. I did find a small vacuum leak and fixed it, but still no start. All I have is a Haynes manual and a multimeter for testing. The closest sure-enough MB shop with diagnostic equipment is about 75 miles away. Any ideas?

Thanks for your input.

190E no start

Tunk - Thanks for the note. Yes, the cover does state what the fuse goes to -- the right front & rear left window lifts. Can't figure out why this would be connected to a no start. (The windows do work since I put in a new fuse). Know of any module that would cause this problem -- having to pump gas peddle to keep running?

Thanks,

can we back up here. you tried to start the car and the fuse blew. how did you know this had happened? Was it just a wild guess? if you take the fuse out and start the car does it still run rough- if so does that mean the fuse has nothing to do with it? have you checked the obvious plugs wires rotor good fuel... I'd say your next step is to try to eliminate variables. and this blown fuse would be number one on my list, take it out start the car and see how she runs.

just as an aside can you double check- again I don't have my car with me- that a 16amp fuse goes in 8 for me? This info is also on the cover of the fuse box. seems a little high to me. I thought the 16's were towards the higher fuse numbers.
