I have noticed a little noise under the car at very slow speeds. Sort of a squeeking/grinding noise. I suspect the center-support bearing on the drive-shaft. The transmission and rear-end were recently serviced and the brakes, rotors, and bearings are all less than 20K old.

I have been told that the drive shaft center support bearing is not replaceable as a part for this model. Is this true? Do I have to get the entire shaft? or do I just buy the bearing like I did for my W123?

Thanks for any insight.... Anybody have ideas on the price? Don't remember what I paid for the W123.

In my W114/5 days, trouble with the center bearing and bushing was usually a thumping on acceleration. I had a couple replaced and I recall it being in the $100-200 range.

If it is the noise described, it is more likely the bearing and it is replaceable. If it a thumping, then it is the bearing support mount. Also replaceable.

Its replacable just as the 123 chassis, unless you have a W115 with M115 then you would have two center supports with two bearings.

Never could figure out why MB made a three piece driveshaft on the W115 4cyl gas models only.

I have also seen the dust washer/cover loosen and spin around the shaft. This would only happen at real slow speed, as when the rpm picks up, the centrifical force holds it in place. I think there is a circlip that holds it in place.
Try turning it by hand. It should only turn with the drive-shaft.

Thanks guys....
It is a single support and bearing, I've never seen the three-piece shafts.... glad I don't have one!

I'll check the dust cover, but it probably needs replacing. It is the original and has 550K miles on it. Time to replace.... damn cheap German parts!

I do not remember the cost for the W123 being over $100 for part and labor. Is the cost really this high or was I not paying attention when I wrote my check?
