Question Oil change questions on 98 C280 MB

Please excuse me if this is a redundant question, but I have perused the forums and have been unable to find this information.

I just bought a 1998 C280 (V6) with 76,000 miles and I want to do the oil changes myself.

What are the best brands and weights of oil and oil filters? Also, where can I get one of those "Topsiders"? Local auto parts places carry almost NO filters for the MB, other than STP, which seems to be another way to spell "DEATH" in MB circles! I finally found a WIX oil filter (51145 with the associated gaskets). Will this suffice?

Thanks guys!

STAY with OE filters, Mann/Hengst/or Knecht. Stay away from the WIX!
Stick with 5W-30 or 0W-40 synthetic oil.

You can order OE filters & other parts HERE (PartsShop)

I bought a Topsider online from www.skilimited.com. If you want to buy something local, try Northern Tools in Richardson. They had a device similar to a Topsider. The main difference was that the one they sell is made of thick plastic.

For filters, use Fastlane.

Topsider found!

Thanks, benzthere! I found that Northern in Richardson actually has several types of "Topsiders", including the old original metal pump can! Thanks so much! Going there today!

Whats wrong with STP? I bought one and it has Made In Germany stamped all over it. I think Deutsch made it because it has there name plus D652 written below it. Part# is S4536 and it seems to be a good quality filter, comes with a big o-ring and two copper gaskets.

ps sorry to hijack your thread the filters not for your car.
