Tires for a 98 SLK

I need to replace the tires on my SLK. I have been getting conflicting advice from various sources. The tires that are on the car are V rated. I have been told that I can go to a lesser rating and the car will drive just fine for what I use it for-everyday and fast highway trips. I do not race or rally this car. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (winter driven but not in snowy conditions if it can be helped).
