Service B Maintenance

Hi:

My car will reach service B maintenance soon, and I want toget some idea what have to be done in service B. The mechanic told me it will cost about $600 to $800. Is anyone here can explain to me why it cost so much? What is different btwn A & B? Can I purchase parts and do it myself?
