I am in the process of doing valves and timing chain on a 78 450. I would like to clean up the oil pan surfaces and lay the new gasket on top of the old one. Can I get away with it? The old gasket is undisturbed at this point and I don't think I can get it all off without pulling the pan...which means pulling the engine. It drops low enough to get the new gasket in.

Steve,
I am of the opinion that you would probably be better off just putting some sealant on the old gasket and not putting a new one on top of it. It is my opinion that you will surely have a leak if you put one gasket on top of another one. Wait and get a second opinion on this one too.
good luck

If oil is leaking from around the oil pan, remove it and replace the gasket with a new one.Scrape all the old gasket off before installing the new one. The old gasket will be hard to remove, but don't despair. That's
why I say if it isn't leaking, leave it alone.I don't know what kind of glue the Germans use on that gasket, but it sure does stick. When installing the new gaket, apply a sealant to both surfaces. If you do this, You will not have any oil leaks.Bill Lewallen
