Between shifting, the 420 revs up then goes into gear
Is this flaring? It has 173,000 miles. We just bought it. Can it be adjusted out using vacuum gauges and hand pumps? or is it a sign the tranny is going south?
Thanks David

Sounds like flaring. I'm not sure what you would do with a vacuum gauge, but a combined modulator and control pressure adjustment has been know to confuse an old tranny into playing nice.

I just got off the phone with him. He said it only seems to do it when it is colder and is between 3rd and 4th he thinks. he said it definitely isn't all gears.
Thanks David

I've read this can happen when the transmission fluid is low. Getting the level closer to the upper mark might make the flaring go away. Throw in a click or two of the modulator, don't remember if CW or CCW to tighten shifts, for good measure. Hardly scientific, but it might delay the rebuild.
