Need help with Check Engine Light

The check engine light came on in my 1992 190 2.6, and I'm trying to find out how to determine what is the cause. I have the repair CD, but I'm not finding it very helpful.

Is there a way to read codes from this system, and if so where would I find out what the codes mean.
