You may have a slight leak at the evaporator core. This will cause a build up of dust and debris like leaves and other organic matter. After time, the matter begins to decay and hence the odor.

The good news is that the evaporator core on the 190 was the easiest to replace.

Bad news. It will cost you over a $1000. How is your A/C working?. This would be a good time to change to R-134 if you desire.
Do a search on the subject.

Sorry to differ, but I'm getting further and further away from liking R134 conversions. In these cars most of the cost is usually in the actual repair, evaporator, compressor, etc. You'll be better off to fix the leak, ensure that you've fixed the leak, then put the R12 in it.

Just my $0.02 from my experiences in changing over a few. It's a one way street, if you want to go back to R12, you really can't do it, the system is contaminated with R134, you have to stick with it.

Best of luck,

Call me simple, but could the smell be simply the buildup of microorganisms. I saw on a car show that the best way to rid the smell is to drill a hole in the duct and then inject this anti-microbial creme (looks like shaving creme). After a while the creme will kills all of the bacterial and wala no more smell.

The quick and dirty way is to spray something like Lysol into the duct (lift up the hood and turn on the a/c) and spray underneath the windshield wiper blade.

I think, not sure, of the disadvantage of converting to R134 is that although it is much more environmentally friendly, it doesn't cool the air was well. If you live in a cool state, no big deal, but in NC, you want the AC as cold as possible, especially this week!

This smell issue may be just the mold that normally builds up when shutting down the AC and the ignition at the same time. I've gotten into the habit of switching to "EC" a block or two from home to let any ice melt off the evaporator before shutting off the engine. Someone told me that you don't get a pressure surge that way too; not sure about this, but at $46 a lb, I want to keep all my freon
