Trailer lights

I have a 1980 300SD and would like to hook up some trailer lights. The harness seems very difficult to deal with. How is the best way to tap into the rear electrical harness for this model car?

On my 190E

The tail light assembly comes out easily. I bought a connector pair and soldiered some wires to the connectors that go to the appropriate bulb and then the other connector goes off to the trailer. I did need to run one wire to the other side for its turn signal. I also had to buy a widget to convert the separate brake/turn signals of the car to the combined brake/turn signals of the trailer.
