2.3-16V Getrag backlash noise

I drove my 16V home today, the "driveshaft hum" the seller disclosed turned out to be coming from the tranny. It's perfect under any forward load, but if I lift throttle in any gear other than direct (5th), it howls quite noticeably under engine braking. Is this at all normal, or do I need countershaft bearings, or is it likely something else?

Also, where's the cheapest source for suspension accumulators (spheres)? I thought they were around $50-60, but they seem to have gone up to around $100 (each). This thing gallops like a racehorse over the slightest pavement ripples. Seems to be holding proper ride height, so I hope the control valve hasn't been pounded to death yet.
