Two weeks ago my car was in for 90K service
and I commented on the fact that it seemed to be misfiring and the mileage was off by 10% or so. The culprit seemed to be the engine wire harness. There were wires shorting. I have heard there may be a Mercedes Benz Service campaign to replace a lot of W124 wire harnesses in the engine bay.
Anyone familiar with this?

Thanks in advance.

Bryan,

I think the recall you are referring to pertains to the M104 dual cam six.

Good luck,

Do you know if there was a recall or a formal TSB?

Thanks,

Use the Shop Forum search engine (upper right corner of this page) and search for "Wiring Harness". Look in Tech Help and the 1999 Tech Help Archives.
There's lots of info on this subject.

Two weeks after buying my used 400E, the electrical systems started going crazy. It took a week for them to determine it was the Lucas harness. Even though it was a year out of warranty, Mercedes picked up the tab for the harness and split the labor cost with me at their "internal" rate.

Though your local dealership may or may not do it on goodwill RBM of Atlanta replaced the wiring harness on my 92 500E at 120K miles free of charge. Took them nearly two months to get parts and the car turned around but it was all done on goodwill. I doubt MB will do anything for you if you had yours done at an independent but if your dealership did the work they might.

RBM also did the wiring harness on my 95 C36 at 65K miles free of charge. This time parts were onhand (no "slowboat from Germany") and the car turned around in a couple days.

Hope this helps...Lee

The dealer ignored my request,so I am going to the regional rep....They did get the parts in about 2 days. I also just replaced $3000 worth of Throttle Actuators last November. The fact that they didn't diagnose the wiring harness in November concerns me a bit. The Actuator may have been fried by the shorting wire harness.
