My 87 300TD seats are the same way. When you sit in them or just push down on the cushion they are real spongy and my wagon only has 65,000 miles on it and I have owned it for 5 years. I also have an 83 wagon and the seats are firmer and more comfortable. I don't know if this is normal or breakdown in the cushion.

It is possible the person who owned the car before you was heavy. That would mean the seat springs are worn. New seat bottom springs are available from M-B.
