Question about hose from radiatior to thermostat housing
I just changed my thermostat in the 1988 300E. I had to rip it out in pieces as it was so stuck in there it would not come out. Anyway, once back in the engine coolant temperature rose to its normal point, at about 82*C to 85*C. Great. Then the hose to the thermostat housing cover popped off and coolant shot all over the place. When I looked carefully at the hose, it has a counterbore for the thermostat housing cover nipple (a black plastic housing cover with integral nipple) and a white plastic reinforcement behind that (down the hose) that starts flush with the end of the counterbore and extends for an inch or so down into the hose, toward the radiator. Anyway, the connection was a very loose fit and when I tightened the hose clamp it did not do much. I tried moving the hose clamp further toward the thermostat housing and that did not solve the problem either. So I put the clamp back on the indentation in the hose where it had been for God knows how long, tightened it with a 7 mm wrench and now it seems to hold. Anyone know what the deal is with this connection? What is the hard, white plastic interior hose liner for? Thanks, Jim

Well, it happened again. So I gathered the housing cover nipple is broken off, and that is what is inside the hose from the radiator. I did search on the subject and found that the plastic covers are to be replaced with a metal one so my inkling that the plastic "insert" inside the hose was really a broken off part of the thermostat housing nipple seems confirmed. So, the replacement metal part will be ordered tomorrow and the hose and thermostat housing cover will be replaced. I think I will flush out the coolant system too as it seemed kind of grimy, a brownish color, while the new stuff I was putting in was the MB fluid and it was nice and clear. The previous owner had the head gasket replaced and I suspect he did not have the coolant system flushed out. The biggest issue was the wife was out driving it when it happened the last time and I had to go retrieve the car. Not good for the image.....Jim

For anyone that is interested in the repair of this problem, the aluminum replacement thermostat housing cover was in stock at my local dealership so I went out an bought it this morning with a new hose and clamps. The part number for the housing cover, which is a "universal replacement" for the plastic unit on W201 and W124 is:
103-203-07-74, and it requires a bolt and washer to seal the air vent connection on a 300E (on my 1988 anyway as the vent connection to the overflow tank goes to the radiator directly), which have the following part numbers: 007603-008106 for the seal ring (copper washer) 007604-008200 for the threaded plug/bolt If you have a W201 and the coolant system vent connection enters the top of the plastic thermostat housing you need a special adaptor, hollow bolt and two seal rings. I have these on order for my 190E 2.3-16 as, after this fiasco I checked and that car also has a plastic cover. By the way, the cost of the new housing cover was $10.00 plus tax (CT sales tax is 6% on this item). I wish I had known about it when I bought the thermostat. I hope this helps someone else - remember to check the thermostat housing wcover hen you buy a thermostat, and replace the hose and housing cover at the same time! Jim
