2000 RPM Rattle... - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

As my 2.0ltr 190e has got quieter (after mucho work) the rattle which was always there under acceleration between 1750 and 2200 rpm peaking at 2000 has got ever louder (relatively speaking). Its otherwise perfectly quiet including at 2000 when under steady load.

Any ideas as to whats causing this rattle sound?.

Check for any loose components including anything on the exhaust. I have seen this happen before where something was slightly loose and the right load and rpm would make it rattle.

Where is the noise coming from and what kind of rattling does it sound like?

Its coming from in front of me somewhere! Sorry I can't be more specific at the moment. Tomorrow I'll take it for a spin on a smooth quiet road with the windows both closed and open and see if I can "locate" the noise. I guess it could be the duplex chain but would'nt that rattle all the time under acceleration?

You're right, I do not think it will be the timing chain. It is likely something is just loose somewhere. Try hunting around to see if everything is tight around the engine and exhaust.

I had a rattle in my car and it was due to the front exhaust "muffler" rotting out on the inside and having loose metal parts in it. At certain rpms, it would rattle like that. Check the front exhaust muffler to make sure its not from there. Another option might be the A/C belt pulley. Belt may be too loose and hence the pulley is rattling.

I won't be a/c as me no have-e! I'll check around the exhaust tomorrow if I remember!

You're right. In Ireland where the sheep mow the fields, the clouds are abundant, and the rain plenty, you don't get much hot weather during the year. Maybe you have to put up with a month of heat or so, and most cars have no A/C there or in England. Been there, seen that, should have thought about it before replying!

Where do you live in Ireland? My wife has ancestors (right sp.?) in Irerland and we spent a few days there touring the country by car and seeing relatives.

You were bang on - a small hole was gradually developing at the point where the downpipe turns horizontal. I checked fiting and saw the forward mid-section was welded to the aft mid-section so buying new pipe was ruled out as it would likely mean two new sections (I bet the join would be very messy if the parts were seperated). Anyway the hole was very small - about a 20 mm long and a 8 mm wide. I bought a repair kit (6 euro), sanded clean the pipe slapped on the goo afixed the flexible surround with 2 jubilee clips put on some goo around the edges and let it set hard naturally. The rattle has gone and so has the smell by the drivers door! Cheap but effective.

Glad to help with your noise issue!! This is a great forum and I love the way we can find answers here. I'm still trying to solve my hard to start issue, but have been sidetracked off it. I'll get back to it and fix it sometime soon.

Any motor parts stockist should sell them - its just a
two-pack of filler and a piece of light guage steel which, with the help of a hose clip (or two) bandages the hole.

Remember to clean the area first with sandpaper so the filler putty takes hold properly.
