Is 500 rpm too slow?

The car is a '88 420SEL. Idle, in park is dead on 500 rpm with an occasional slight rev up (lasts 1-2 seconds).

After doing a search, it seems that most cars idle at 750-800 rpm.
Is 500 too slow and if so how can I fix it?
