I am still in my everlasting quest to locate the oil drain plug on my 1989 300se. I think I have found the sump, the only bolt i can see is on the side of the sump. Could this be the plug? or is the plug underneath the sump?

Thanks again

Oliver

dumb question, but you did remove the plastic sheath (4 screws) first before you tried to locate the oil drain plug, right?

Once doing so, you should be able to locate the drain plug by crawling underneath the car (in front of the drivers side front tire) and accessing the drain plug. The plug will be located somewhat perpindicular to the ground if I am not mistaken.

There was no plastic sheath that i could see, there is just a nut, about 1.4cm poking out of the sump pointing towards the drivers side tyre.

Maybe it is different in the UK, or maybe this nut has nothing to do with the oil change at all!

Thanks

Sounds right. Maybe a 14 mm or close to that size nut. Be careful as these can strip easily.

Thanks for your help.

I will tell you how it went when I get the cash to buy the oil!
I don't know about prices over in the states, but to fill the car with oil will cost me about £44 (about $80).

Well, here goes!!

Thanks

Oliver

Wow! That's expenisive oil! My 300 takes approx 7 quarts (7 L) of oil which costs less than $15 US.

There is a drain plug on the rear of the lower oil pan. The size is 13mm and when removing, if it does not come out after loosening with your fingers, replace due to being over torqued.
Keep in mind the best method of draining the oil is via oil suction, actually removes more oil that draining and less mess. There are several aftermarket oil vacuum devices available.

I have to take out a bank loan to fill the car with petrol every week.
With our petrol prices it costs me £60+ (I think that is about $100)!!
This just proves how much I love my car. I spend most of what I earn on it.

Jeff, your killin me!

What are the Brits doing to you guys? I never heard of oil being that much and I have traveled to a few countries with even higher taxes.

I cannot immagine what it would cost to take it to a Tech to get it done.

I have priced a big tub of mobil 1 at just over £22, i believe my car will take atleast 1 and a half of these, so I'm pretty sure it works out at about £40, although coming to think about it, it does sound quite high. But then again everything is expensive over here. Apart from my car which i bought for £3500. That got me a 1989 300se in black with cream leather with electric heated seats and all the other goodies. It has 130,000 miles, but runs very well, apart from a few minor problems.

Oliver, I dont know where you buy your oil, but premium quality, Castrol is only about £12 for 5 litres.

That is a lot cheaper, in my local garages, it is £10 for a small top-up bottle, and about £20-£22 for a big bottle, that is on the shell oil, and the mobil 1.
Maybe we just get ripped off up here in birmingham!
