Have a 1971 280SL with 105k miles. Runs great except blows white smoke when decellerating from over 40mph. Valve job done including new guides and seals. Cold compression test done #1 - 140 #2 - 130 #3 - 135 #4 - 135 #5 - 130 #6 - 135. Transmission vacuum valve checked out okay.
Is it time for an engine rebuild or is there something else that should be checked out? ------------------ |

You still have a head problem, but it might not be guides/seals related.
Over the year I have seen many of these heads with internal oil leaks. Possible places are the ball adjuster platforms. They screw into the head and the bottom of the hole is either the intake or exhaust runners. I have also seen a number of guides leaking around the outside, between the guide and the head. Sometimes when the guide is removed a groove is galled into the bore. The new guide doesn't seal. I have also seen many guide seals installed improperly. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |

This is a question more than a suggestion - could white smoke be indicating water in the combustion mix?

Has it been using brake fluid??
I had one with same complaint and found the booster was slowly sucking brake fluid past the master rear seal. An indicator is to check the clear vac line to distributor for fluid. That's where it winds up. If this is suspect, take the vac hose off booster and take a look in there. |
