Has it been properly lubed with the MB sunroof lube, known as Gleitpaste. Cost in the States is $55-$60 for a 1kg can (or is it 1 lb???), expensive but the can lasts forever.

Does it only go halfway back with the express function or is it when operating the roof manually as well?

Mercedes has redesigned the sunroof cover plates located on each side of the sunroof guides (where the cable is popping out) which is secured with two screws instead of one. I replaced mine and the sunroof works like new.

The Mercedes part # is 2107840456, you will need two and the total cost should be under $5 US.
