Unhappy '02 C32 AMG blower always on, heat & A/C at the same time

Hi there,

I am a newbie, so please excuse if the answer to this exists elsewhere on the forum, but I did earnestly look. I found many similar items, but not exactly what I am experiencing.

As the title states I have a 2002 C32 AMG, so how can I complain , but I am in New Mexico and my Climate Control began to malfunction. All of the following happened in a single drive:

At first the A/C only came out the lower vents and over riding the auto to manually set which vents had no effect. I tried turning off the fan ( a really tedious task to be sure) by lowering it one step at a time until the unit reads "O", but the fan speed didn't change and even with the CCU off it kept running.

After fiddling with it for awhile, trying various buttons the defrost came on, with heat, and fan was redirected to the windshield and side windows. Now bear in mind it is 95 degrees here in NM, so this was to say the least unpleasant.

A small amount of cooled air comes through the dash vents at the same time, but only when the fresh air wheel is all the way on. The air is chilled, so it is not just outside air, but it barely comes out.

I am pretty mechanically and electrically inclined, so if it is as simple as replacing (or better yet repairing) the CCU I feel I can tackle it (I hope ) . The one and only mercedes dealer in NM wants $100 to tell me what it is and how much it will cost to fix it. I am not opposed to them getting what they are worth, but I thought I might find the answer here and learn a lot more about my sweet sedan.

And besides, it should be stated just how valuable the information given here is worth

Thank you for any help you may give. Please know that this forum is much appreciated.

C32 AMG Enthusiast.

Does the A/C compressor work? If you have too little refrigerant in the system, the compressor does not start/ does not start always.

If the fan direction does not work, iftmight also be the A/C control panel. Replacing it is easy. Open the center console, and you have access to the panel. I have written instructions here: http://www.iki.fi/eerola/auto/MBC320Tdiy.html | Removing dashboard panels. New panels can be found in eBay.

Hi eerola,

Thank you for the response.

The AC compressor works correctly and the system is charged. The real problem is the CCU will no longer control the vents or the fan.

The moment I put the key in and turn the ignition the fan starts up even if the CCU is off. The fan only runs at one speed, full, and 80% of the air is going through the defroster vents with heat. So I get 80% heat in the defroster vents and 20% AC in the dash vents.

Any ideas?

Thanks again,
C32 AMG

Hi eerola,

Just looked at your pictorial on how to remove the center console. Very nicely done! Thanks much.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? Is it the CCU? Something deeper in the system?

Any help would be appreciated.
