Neutral start switch adjustment
Hi , The neutral / park safety sw. has started to play up.
My 300SEL , 1988 . will only start in neutral . Only sometimes , when I fiddle about with the gear shifter will it start in park. Where is there an adjustment for the switch. I have had the center consol out and could not see anything. Thanks for your suggestions .

The neutral start switch is attached to the side of the transmission right where the shift rod connects. Don't touch the neutral start switch until you verify that the shift rod bushings are good. If you're next question is, "What shift rod bushings?" there's your problem.

Sixto,
Could you clarify something for me about the NSS. Mine was replaced because my 300e would not start in park or neutral. Now the car starts in park, but not in neutral. Is this correct, meaning the switch allows a start in neutral when the car won't start in park? Thanks.

There is an alignment pin that is to be inserted into the center of the plastic piece afixed to the selector shaft. I believe a 4 or 5 mm alan wrench will suffice. Lossen the 10mm bolts on the switch, insert the pin to align the switch and then resecure the bolts. I think it is done with the trans in N. < 30 minutes flat backing!

MrCJames,
Are you saying that with a good nss the car should start in both p and n and the nss is not aligned properly if it doesn't? thanks

I am suggesting that it is possible that the alignment is slightly off, I have no way of knowing if it is the cause of your problem. You mentioned your NSS was replaced, my thought "check the basics!" So I question "is it adjusted properly?" It is possible to have it start in one position and not the other. This also assumes that the shift rod bushings are good. Are they good?
I find staying extremely close to the basics is a life saver |

I was not told the bushings were bad, & the shifting is very smooth. I'll have the nss alignment checked. Thanks.
